New Entertaining Areas, Updated Swimming Pool Garden & Planting for Rural Property

Design Brief: After a move from the town to the countryside near the Surrey border, the clients asked Heather to help them to make sense of their new rural landscape with a creative design brief and to update the existing tired paving in the swimming pool garden and along their garden paths to make it safer to move around the garden.

Heather created a design for the whole garden which created several distinct zones: an entertaining terrace for dining near the house; sculpture lawn creating focal points across the landscape; woodland garden for unstructured children’s play; garden room with bar and viewing terrace for enjoying views across the valley; utility area; guest driveway and access paths to the house; new boundary treatments for privacy; meadow for supporting wildlife; badminton lawn; coffee terrace to enjoy the morning sun; private courtyard garden; and swimming pool terrace and arbour for relaxing and entertaining friends. All linked with steps and updated pathways and structural, floral and scented planting.

Being built in stages, the first phase has seen the swimming pool terrace and arbour, limestone coffee terrace and rose arch, dining terrace and new sandstone walls installed, together with access paths incorporating clay paver insets and steps and planting throughout. Boundaries have also been updated and guest facilities installed. The next phase will be planting of the wildflower meadow in Spring of 2025.

This garden is being built to Heather’s designs by Esse Landscapes.
